The town was incorporated in 1785 and, in 1881, the western neighbor of New Haven purchased a portion of the town, thus altering the borders.
Today, East Haven is known for its prime location on Long Island Sound, with 3.5 miles of beachfront, including a public town beach. Housing in East Haven ranges from condominiums and apartments to traditional colonials and contemporary single family homes.
The town hosts 11 public schools, providing quality education to students grades K-12.
While a suburb of New Haven, East Haven maintains a distinct community spirit. Year round activities are sponsored by numerous social and civic organizations. The town maintains several active recreational programs and facilities including an ice-skating rink.
